Advocate Gumbi has dedicated most of her legal<br />
career to public interest law. From 2009 to date<br />
she has been an advocate and a consultant.<br />
From 1994 to 2008 she was a special advisor<br />
to then deputy president and president Thabo<br />
Mbeki. In this role, Advocate Gumbi was one<br />
of the lead negotiators for South Africa in the<br />
World Trade Organisation negotiations. She<br />
has also served as President Mbeki’s personal<br />
representative on the G8 and in the Progressive<br />
Governance group and participated in the<br />
activities of the World Economic Forum, both in<br />
the southern <strong>African</strong> region and in Davos. She<br />
continues to be an active participant in this forum.<br />
In addition, she has advised President Mbeki<br />
on domestic policy matters working to ensure a<br />
global presence for South <strong>African</strong> companies and<br />
assisted many South <strong>African</strong> companies in their<br />
expansion globally.<br />
Leon, currently CEO of ABIL and MD of <strong>African</strong><br />
<strong>Bank</strong> Limited, founded <strong>African</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> Investments<br />
Limited (previously Theta Group Limited) in<br />
partnership with Gordon Schachat. He guided<br />
the company through the various mergers,<br />
acquisitions and the operational establishment of<br />
the present day <strong>African</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> Investments Limited.<br />
Jack is an independent advisor. In addition, he<br />
has lectured part time at the Gordon Institute<br />
of Business Studies since 2001 in the areas<br />
of strategy, competitiveness and choice,<br />
integrating insights from competitive strategy, logic<br />
systems and behavioural economics.<br />
He has held non-executive board positions in<br />
the private sector (Edcon: 2001-2007) and in<br />
NGOs (CityYear since inception until 2008; CIDA<br />
University Advisory Board from inception until<br />
2007), and was a member of the SA Health<br />
Ministerial Advisory Committee on Financial<br />
Reform (2009). He has worked as an independent<br />
advisor since September 2008, closely associated<br />
with the Monitor Group in the Middle East, and<br />
regularly advises the South <strong>African</strong> government<br />
on a variety of issues. He has recently worked on<br />
issues of healthcare and education reform, crime<br />
reduction strategies, nutrition policy, and economic<br />
growth strategies. He has advised the Presidency<br />
(Monitoring and Evaluation) and the Gauteng<br />
Province on economic growth challenges, as<br />
well as worked with several private sector clients<br />
(mining, healthcare, retail, banking as well as the<br />
chairman of Eskom) in South Africa, in addition to<br />
serving clients based in Switzerland, the UK and<br />
Saudi Arabia.<br />
