Before tt-~e throne is an altar covered with black satin,<br />
strewed with tears. In front of the altar, the black coytr<br />
falls to the floor and on it are painted or embroidered<br />
a dcath’s head and two cross bones. Over the death’s<br />
llcad is the letter J:. and under the cross bones the letter<br />
M.<br />
On this altar are the books of constitution and stattites<br />
of thc ordcr, a naked sword, a sceptrc and a balancv.<br />
In the ~Vest are the two ~Vardcns. In front of each is<br />
a table covered with crimson cloth, lined and edged<br />
with black and strewed with tears. <strong>The</strong> cover of each<br />
table hangs to the floor in front, and on cach cover, in<br />
front, the four letters N. -.K. .—M. -.K. , each two if<br />
in Hchrew, being read from right to left. On each table<br />
are two nakcd swords, crossed. <strong>The</strong> hall is dIvided<br />
into two parts, by a raIlIng or balustrade. <strong>The</strong> East 15<br />
in the rear of this, and thIc West in front of It. In the<br />
~Vestis a representation of the camp of the Princes.<br />
OFFICERS AND TITLES :—<strong>The</strong> Mastcr is styled Soycreign<br />
of Sovereigns, Great Prince, or which is more<br />
usual and far better, Illustrious Commander in Chief.<br />
He is said to represent Frederick the Second, King of<br />
Prussia. <strong>The</strong> two Wardens are styled Lieutenant Commanders.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Orator, Minister of State.<br />
Besidcs these officers, there are a Grand Chancellor, a<br />
Grand Secretary, a Grand Keeper of the Seals, and Archives,<br />
a Grand T~’easurer, a Grand Architect, or Engineer,<br />
a Grand Hospitaller, and Surgeon, a Grand<br />
Standard Bearer, a Grand Master of Ceremonies, a<br />
Grand Captain of the Guards, and a Grand Tyler. In<br />
some localities, there are also an Illustrious Deputy<br />
Commander in Chicf and an Assistant Grand Tyler.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Grand Secretary, Grand Chancellor and Grand<br />
Keeper of the Seals and Archives, are sometimes sepa-<br />
1;lte officers, and sometimes the three offices are combined<br />
in one, that of Grand Chancellor.<br />
