against the selfi~hness, the apathy and the indifference<br />

of the world around us, and to overcome the same in<br />

our own natures, and so remove the last and greatest<br />

obstacle to the final triumph of the new land of love,<br />

and the universal dominion of the true principles of<br />

<strong>Masonry</strong>. Amen! Amen! Amen! Amen! Amen I<br />

Commander in Chief—Be seated my brethren! (<strong>The</strong><br />

three circuits being completed, the Grand Master of<br />

Ceremonies halts with the candidate facing the throne.<br />

Master of Ceremonies—Illustrious Commander in<br />

Chief, the candidate has returned in safety from his fifth<br />

and last campaign.<br />

Commander in Chief—My brother, we congratulate<br />

you upon your safe return among us. <strong>The</strong> three-fold<br />

enemy against whom you last marched, is found in <strong>Masonry</strong>,<br />

in our own bosoms as well as in the world. We<br />

incur no personal hazard in encountering this triune<br />

evil spirit, but it is the more~obstinate and almost unconquerable,<br />

because it i~ passive, stationary find inert.<br />

It is the spirit of selfishness, apathy and indifference.<br />

Could we but overcome it, and substitute in its place<br />

zeal, ardour and disinterestedness, the victory over the<br />

giant wrongs and injustices, would be certain and<br />

speedy.<br />

It is difficult to louse even Masons to energetic action.<br />

It is difficult to convince them that there is anything<br />

in <strong>Masonry</strong> beyond the mere work of the lodge. If,<br />

remembering your pledge now given us, you do not fall<br />

into this apathy—indifference, but are faithful to your<br />

obligations, <strong>Masonry</strong> will profit by your labors and the<br />
