“The Pharmco Foundation has committed $3 million over three<br />

years, beginning in 2003, to support a highly targeted domestic<br />

Breast Cancer grant making initiative called the Pharmco<br />

Breast Cancer Research Initiative.<br />

The initiative will support culturally appropriate prevention<br />

programs such as breast exam techniques, targeting multicultural<br />

communities in the United States as well as other<br />

countries, in addition to providing funding to breast cancer<br />

research entities.<br />

The initiative is designed to help lower the following breast<br />

cancer statistics:<br />

• Every 3 minutes a woman in the United States is<br />

diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2003, approximately<br />

212,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be<br />

diagnosed. Nearly 40,000 women will die from this<br />

disease.<br />

Breast cancer is the leading cancer among white and<br />

African American women.<br />

in 20 in 1960 to one in eight today.<br />
