C. Clientele and Projected Enrollment.<br />

1. Clientele<br />

a. We anticipate <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> our program from:<br />

• Students hav<strong>in</strong>g obta<strong>in</strong>ed MS degrees <strong>in</strong> K<strong>in</strong>esiology, Exercise Science, <strong>Ph</strong>ysical<br />

Education, and the like, from accredited universities with<strong>in</strong> the region, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

University of <strong>New</strong> <strong>Mexico</strong>.<br />

• Students hav<strong>in</strong>g obta<strong>in</strong>ed MS degrees or first professional degrees <strong>in</strong> Health Science<br />

and/or Allied Health Sciences (e.g., Doctorate of <strong>Ph</strong>ysical Therapy; Masters of<br />

Public Health) from accredited <strong>in</strong>stitutions.’<br />

• Students hav<strong>in</strong>g obta<strong>in</strong>ed 30 graduate credit hours <strong>in</strong> K<strong>in</strong>esiology or a related<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>e, and who, hav<strong>in</strong>g demonstrated strong academic potential, make a decision<br />

to pursue the <strong>Ph</strong>D <strong>in</strong> K<strong>in</strong>esiology.<br />

b. Admission Qualifications<br />

Admission will be a two-stage process. Applicants will have to satisfy requirements of<br />

the NMSU Graduate School, and must also be accepted by the Department of HPDR.<br />

Graduate School Admission: Admission to the proposed <strong>Ph</strong>D program <strong>in</strong> K<strong>in</strong>esiology<br />

requires that the NMSU Graduate School first admit the student. Students seek<strong>in</strong>g<br />

admission to the graduate school must possess as a m<strong>in</strong>imum of a bachelor’s degree or<br />

an advanced degree from an accredited <strong>in</strong>stitution. The program or preparation should be<br />

substantially equivalent to that which could potentially be obta<strong>in</strong>ed from similar<br />

programs at NMSU. Candidates are also required to be proficient <strong>in</strong> written and spoken<br />

English.<br />

Once the Graduate School admits a student, a “Certificate of Admission” is issued. The<br />

Graduate School considers this certificate of admission to be valid for a period of one<br />

year dur<strong>in</strong>g which time the applicant may formally apply to the <strong>Ph</strong>D program.<br />

Departmental Admission: Admission to the Graduate School is no guarantee that the<br />

student will be accepted <strong>in</strong> the doctoral program <strong>in</strong> K<strong>in</strong>esiology. The follow<strong>in</strong>g are<br />

departmental admission requirements:<br />

• Applicants must provide current (with<strong>in</strong> last 5 years) Graduate Record Exam<br />

(GRE) scores to the Graduate School and/or department of HPDR. There is no<br />

m<strong>in</strong>imum score requirement for entrance. Rather the GRE score may be<br />

considered by potential advisors and will be used for formative program<br />

assessment.<br />

• Applicants must write a brief essay regard<strong>in</strong>g their <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Ph</strong>D program<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g some description of their research <strong>in</strong>terests and other facets of their<br />

proposed program of study, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the faculty member with whom they wish<br />

to work.<br />

• Applicants must hold one of the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

o A Masters degree <strong>in</strong> K<strong>in</strong>esiology or a related field.<br />
