This report exam<strong>in</strong>es the adequacy of the NMSU Library’s collections to support the proposed <strong>Ph</strong>D<br />

program <strong>in</strong> k<strong>in</strong>esiology that has been proposed by the College of Education. The report focuses on<br />

three broad areas.<br />

1. Current scope of the collection<br />

2. Start up costs to achieve a doctoral level collection<br />

3. Ongo<strong>in</strong>g costs to support a doctoral level collection<br />

The Library’s collections are analyzed as to their current status and future needs by format (books,<br />

periodicals, databases, etc.), by content (subject strengths and weaknesses), by depth, and by currency.<br />

II. Current scope of the collection<br />

General Note on Use of Collection Analysis by OCLC®<br />

This analysis focuses on fifteen OCLC® Conspectus subject areas most core to k<strong>in</strong>esiology. These<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude program focus areas of k<strong>in</strong>esiology & human movement, gerontology, geriatrics, obesity<br />

(most particularly childhood obesity), community-based health and exercise, and child development.<br />

The OCLC® Conspectus provides a standardized method to organize and analyze library collections<br />

by subject. OCLC® is a nonprofit computer library service and research organization. More than<br />

53,548 libraries <strong>in</strong> 96 countries and territories around the world use OCLC® services to locate,<br />

acquire, catalog, lend and preserve library materials. The fifteen core subject areas are:<br />
