lam very pleased to provide you with this letter in support of your proposed program forthe
degree of PhD in Kinesiology. I have read your proposal with great interest and believe that the
proposed program is consistent with the mission of the university and has the potentialto
contribute to the advancement of our understanding of public health issues that are of critical
importance to the state of New Mexico and the nation.
As the Director of the Southwest Institute for Health Disparities Research, I am very eager to
pursue interdisciplinary and inter-institutional research collaborations. I believe that the
research interests of the faculty in the department of Human Performance, Dance, &
Recreation, particularly in the areas of childhood obesity and obesity related diseases, as well
as in the area of successful aging and optimizing functional lifespan, provide opportunities for
great synergy with our research interests in the College of Health and Social Services, and will
support the mission of our Southwest Institute for Health Disparities Research.
I am pleased that our academic units are already working together on an important federal
initiative project, and our faculty members are working on other projects related to physical
activity and health promotion. I look forward to working with you and further exploring specific
