In addition, the department of HPDR will also participate <strong>in</strong> programmatic evaluations as provided<br />
by the American K<strong>in</strong>esiology Association (AKA). The AKA rates programs based on certa<strong>in</strong><br />
student and program characteristics, and research productivity with an emphasis on publications,<br />
presentations, and funded research per full-time graduate faculty.<br />
F<strong>in</strong>ally, the department will also provide annual f<strong>in</strong>ancial analyses to justify the cost of the program<br />
and to assist <strong>in</strong> the process of cont<strong>in</strong>ued program development.<br />
The <strong>in</strong>formation acquired through the above processes will be tied to decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g structures at<br />
the department level. Of particular relevance here are issues perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to curriculum design and<br />
research supports. It is a goal of the department that the assessment process for the <strong>Ph</strong>D program <strong>in</strong><br />
K<strong>in</strong>esiology will serve as a model for the College of Education and for the University so as to<br />
facilitate a greater culture of assessment where<strong>in</strong> program outcomes are l<strong>in</strong>ked to decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
structures at the College and University level.<br />
H. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PROGRAM AND<br />
INSTITUTIONAL COMMITMENT<br />
1. Structural Location of Oversight – Adm<strong>in</strong>istrative responsibility<br />
The <strong>Ph</strong>D program <strong>in</strong> K<strong>in</strong>esiology will be adm<strong>in</strong>istered by the department of Human<br />
Performance, Dance, and Recreation. The organization of Key elements is described <strong>in</strong> the<br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g paragraphs.<br />
The Academic Department Head for HPDR has responsibility for oversight of all aspects of the<br />
<strong>Ph</strong>D program <strong>in</strong> K<strong>in</strong>esiology. The Department Head will be responsible for mak<strong>in</strong>g graduate<br />
teach<strong>in</strong>g assignments, the appo<strong>in</strong>tment of state-funded graduate assistants, and the teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
assignments of those graduate assistants.<br />
The department will appo<strong>in</strong>t a Graduate Programs Coord<strong>in</strong>ator who will oversee the key<br />
elements of the program <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g assur<strong>in</strong>g proper admissions processes, <strong>in</strong>itial advis<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
<strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Ph</strong>D students, ensur<strong>in</strong>g that the students have identified a faculty mentor as a part of<br />
the admissions process, provid<strong>in</strong>g a method of review for graduate assistantship applications. As<br />
students move through the program the Graduate Coord<strong>in</strong>ator will ensure that the student and<br />
the student’s advisor and committee are progress<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a manner that is consistent with the<br />
requirements of the student’s program of study. Any concerns regard<strong>in</strong>g the program of study<br />
