The single wetland of Macro and Micro Prespa is the third largest body of water in the Balkans. The ecological and cultural importance of the Prespa lake basin and the need to protect this environment has been recognized by the creation of several national parks in all three countries. The Prespa lakes developed from a geotectonic depression during the Pliocene Epoch. They are part of the Dasseret group of basins in the Aegean Lake Zone—a group that includes Prespa’s famous ‘sister’ Lake Ohrid. Преспанските Езера - Големо и Мало Преспанско Езеро, формираат една целина и како таква претставува трето по големина водно тело на Балканот. Еколошкото и културно значење на сливот на Преспанските Езера и потребата од неговата заштита се огледува и во прогласувањето на систем од национални паркови во сите три држави. Езерата настанале од геотектонска депресија формирана за време на Плиоценот. Тие се дел од Десаретската група на сливови на Егејската езерска зона во која спаѓа и надалеку познатото Охридско Езеро. Ujërat e Prespës së Madhe dhe të Vogël janë trupi i tretë ujor për nga madhësia në Ballkan. Rëndësia ekologjike dhe kulturore e basenit të liqenit të Prespës dhe nevoja për të mbrojtur këtë mjedis është treguar me krijimin e parqeve nacionale në të tre vendet. Liqenet e Prespës janë formuar nga depresionet gjeotektonike gjatë epokës së Pliocenit. Ata janë pjesë të grupit të baseneve Dasseret të Zonës së liqeneve Egje – grup ku përfshihet liqenit i famshëm ‘motër’ Liqeni i Ohrit. Ο ενιαίος υγρότοπος της Μεγάλης και της Μικρής Πρέσπας είναι ο τρίτος μεγαλύτερος στα Βαλκάνια. Η οικολογική και η πολιτιστική σημασία της λεκάνης των Πρεσπών και η ανάγκη να προστατευθεί αυτό το περιβάλλον αναγνωρίστηκε με την δημιουργία εθνικών πάρκων και στις τρείς χώρες. Οι λίμνες των Πρεσπών δημιουργήθηκαν από γεωτεκτονική συμπίεση κατά την διάρκεια του Πλειόκαινου. Είναι μέρος της ομάδας των Δασσαρητικών λεκανών στην γενικότερη ζώνη της λεκάνης του Αιγαίου - μια ομάδα που περιλαμβάνει την διάσημη «αδερφή» λίμνη της Πρέσπας, την λίμνη Αχρίδα. 7
