G.5d PROCLAMATION CELEBRATING
SCHOOL NUTRITION EMPLOYEE WEEK
WHEREAS preparing healthy school meals, teaching healthy nutrition
habits, and offering a friendly greeting are all in a day’s work
for the 425 school nutrition employees serving students in the
Fayette County Schools; and
WHEREAS, for many children, school lunch is the most important and
nutrient-rich meal of the day, and children depend upon
school lunch for roughly 1/3 to 1/2 of their daily nutritional
intake; and
WHEREAS, the hard-working school nutrition employees in Fayette
County serve, on average, 7,980 breakfasts and 23,596 lunches
each day; and
WHEREAS, school nutrition employees must balance many roles and
follow numerous federal, state and local regulations to ensure
safe and healthy meals are available in schools; and
WHEREAS, a commitment to continuous improvement has led the
district’s child nutrition department to decrease the use of
fryers in school cafeterias, pilot farm to school programs and
participate in the fresh fruit and vegetable program; and
WHEREAS, school nutrition employees are trained sanitation and food
safety experts who must manage financially self-sufficient
programs despite limited funds to prepare and serve each
meal; and
WHEREAS, children who eat school meals consume more fruits,
vegetables, whole grains and dairy items than children who do
not eat school meals; and
WHEREAS the men and women who prepare and serve school meals help
nurture our children through their daily interaction and
support; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED, that the members of the Fayette
County Board of Education hereby express their profound feeling of
gratitude and deep appreciation for the valuable school nutrition
employees and join the rest of the country in celebrating May 2 to May 6,
2011 as School Nutrition Employee Week.
BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED, that this proclamation be spread on the
official minutes of the Board of Education.
