G.5d PROCLAMATION CELEBRATING<br />

SCHOOL NUTRITION EMPLOYEE WEEK<br />

WHEREAS preparing healthy school meals, teaching healthy nutrition<br />

habits, and <strong>of</strong>fering a friendly greeting are all in a day’s work<br />

for the 425 school nutrition employees serving students in the<br />

<strong>Fayette</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Schools</strong>; and<br />

WHEREAS, for many children, school lunch is the most important and<br />

nutrient-rich meal <strong>of</strong> the day, and children depend upon<br />

school lunch for roughly 1/3 to 1/2 <strong>of</strong> their daily nutritional<br />

intake; and<br />

WHEREAS, the hard-working school nutrition employees in <strong>Fayette</strong><br />

<strong>County</strong> serve, on average, 7,980 breakfasts and 23,596 lunches<br />

each day; and<br />

WHEREAS, school nutrition employees must balance many roles and<br />

follow numerous federal, state and local regulations to ensure<br />

safe and healthy meals are available in schools; and<br />

WHEREAS, a commitment to continuous improvement has led the<br />

district’s child nutrition department to decrease the use <strong>of</strong><br />

fryers in school cafeterias, pilot farm to school programs and<br />

participate in the fresh fruit and vegetable program; and<br />

WHEREAS, school nutrition employees are trained sanitation and food<br />

safety experts who must manage financially self-sufficient<br />

programs despite limited funds to prepare and serve each<br />

meal; and<br />

WHEREAS, children who eat school meals consume more fruits,<br />

vegetables, whole grains and dairy items than children who do<br />

not eat school meals; and<br />

WHEREAS the men and women who prepare and serve school meals help<br />

nurture our children through their daily interaction and<br />

support; and<br />

NOW THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED, that the members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Fayette</strong><br />

<strong>County</strong> <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> hereby express their pr<strong>of</strong>ound feeling <strong>of</strong><br />

gratitude and deep appreciation for the valuable school nutrition<br />

employees and join the rest <strong>of</strong> the country in celebrating May 2 to May 6,<br />

2011 as School Nutrition Employee Week.<br />

BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED, that this proclamation be spread on the<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficial minutes <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong>.<br />
