a. Joe Whalen, Henry Clay High School: First Place, State Wrestling Tournament<br />
Joe Whalen a senior at Henry Clay High School brought home a first-place trophy from the 2011 state<br />
wrestling tournament<br />
b. Elaine Lin, Beaumont Middle School, Angeline He, Lexington Traditional Magnet School, and<br />
Kathleen Yang, Winburn Middle School: American Mathematics Competition<br />
In November, more than one-hundred and fifty thousand students across the nation participated in the<br />
American Mathematics Competition Eight, an exam for middle school students and designed to<br />
promote the development and enhancement <strong>of</strong> problem-solving skills. Elaine Lin from Beaumont<br />
Middle School and Kathleen Yang from Winburn Middle School received perfect scores. Angeline<br />
He from Lexington Traditional Magnet School scored in the top one percent nationally.<br />
c. Jessie Clark Middle School: First Place LEGO League’s State Tournament<br />
Nathan Allan, Jonah Andreatta, Benjamin Bossert, William Bossert, Alex Brinkhorst, Ben<br />
Howell, Drew Norby, Seth Rogers, Mitchell Slavik and Jared Young were first-place winners in<br />
Robot Design at the LEGO League‟s State Tournament.<br />
d. Winburn Middle School: Second Place LEGO League’s State Tournament<br />
Ben Gardner, Samuel Springate, Andrew Tapia and Kevin Zhang were the second-place winners<br />
in the LEGO League‟s State Tournament.<br />
e. Dixie Elementary/Lexington Traditional Magnet: Second Place LEGO League’s State<br />
Tournament<br />
Alec Baron, Seth Bashore, Taylore Jordan, Zachary Jordan, Cody Leslie, Ryan Norton and<br />
Kylie Russ won second place in team spirit at the LEGO League‟s State Tournament.<br />
f. Edythe J. Hayes Football Team: 2010 City Champions<br />
The Edythe J. Hayes Middle School „A‟ team won the 2010 city football championship. They<br />
finished with an eight and one record. The „B‟ football team finished its season undefeated. This<br />
group <strong>of</strong> players boasted an overall G.P.A <strong>of</strong> 3.2 during the season.<br />
g. Tates Creek Middle School Girls’ Basketball: 2011 City Champs<br />
The girls‟ basketball teams at Tates Creek Middle School won the 2010 city championships. Because<br />
<strong>of</strong> renovations at their school this year, the Tates Creek girls practiced at six in the morning and<br />
played the entire season without a home game.<br />
h. Russ Bryant, Chris Gerhardstein, Chris Rush, and Nick Wrightson, Henry Clay High School<br />
and Rebecca Hamperian, Lafayette High School: First Place, 2011 KHSAA Swimming and<br />
Diving Championships<br />
During the state swimming and diving championships, Nick Wrightson, a junior at Henry Clay High<br />
School, won his third straight title in the individual freestyle and was named the boys‟ Outstanding<br />
Meet Competitor. Nick, along with Russ Bryant, Chris Gerhardstein and Chris Rush, placed first<br />
in the four-hundred freestyle relay. In the diving portion <strong>of</strong> the competition, Rebecca Hamperian <strong>of</strong><br />
Lafayette won her second straight title in the one-meter diving event.<br />
