DAILY LIFE AT THE WHITE HOUSE<br />

see the President has an appointment with him or not. If the<br />

individual has an appointment, his arrival is announced <strong>by</strong><br />

telephone. <strong>The</strong> secret service men, who are stationed at<br />

the entrance to the residence, are always informed when<br />

callers have an engagement and are entitled to approach<br />

the residence.<br />

Those who go to Oyster Bay expecting to see the Presi-<br />

dent without an engagement may be detained there for some<br />

time, or meet with disappointment. <strong>The</strong> President goes to<br />

his country home for recreation and rest. He sees everybody,<br />

however, when he possibly can. It is assumed that people will<br />

be considerate <strong>of</strong> the President's well-being, and not annoy<br />

him <strong>by</strong> frequent visits, unless they have very important busi-<br />

ness. It should be considered that this is the only opportunity<br />

the President has for rest.<br />

NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY<br />

<strong>The</strong> President <strong>of</strong> the United States is the only citizen <strong>of</strong><br />

the Republic who is prohibited from leaving our shores and<br />

visiting a foreign land, while he is President. <strong>The</strong>re is not a<br />

free American citizen in this country who is not privileged to<br />

leave this country at any time he chooses, except the Presi-<br />

dent <strong>of</strong> the United States.<br />

EASTER EGG ROLLING<br />

<strong>The</strong> Easter egg rolling on the White House grounds on<br />

the Monday following each Easter Sunday is a unique affair.<br />

<strong>The</strong> custom <strong>of</strong> inviting the children <strong>of</strong> Washington to the<br />

White House grounds once a year originated many years ago,<br />

and no president and his wife have given serious consideration<br />

to putting a stop to the custom. President and Mrs. Roose-<br />

velt take a special delight in this annual festival for the small
