A TYPICAL WYOMING RECEPTION<br />

On Monday, June ist, a Wild West exhibition was given in<br />

his honor. <strong>The</strong> first event was the presentation to the President<br />

<strong>of</strong> a- beautiful horse and a complete .riding outfit. <strong>The</strong><br />

present was the gift <strong>of</strong> the people <strong>of</strong> Cheyenne and Douglas.<br />

<strong>The</strong> President responded in a happy vein, saying that it was<br />

the best riding animal he had been astride, and asked permission<br />

to rechristen the animal Wyoming.<br />

At the conclusion <strong>of</strong> the wild horse race, which was the<br />

next feature, President <strong>Roosevelt</strong> remarked to Secretary<br />

Wilson, who was present:<br />

"That is the finest exhibition I ever witnessed. Whenever<br />

Uncle Sam again needs cavalrymen, these are the men we<br />

want."<br />

A dozen wild-eyed Texas steers were next turned loose and<br />

roped; then followed an exhibition <strong>of</strong> rough riding. <strong>The</strong><br />

worst outlaw horses on Wyoming ranches were ridden <strong>by</strong><br />

Thad Souden, champion rough rider <strong>of</strong> the world, and others.<br />

<strong>The</strong> climax was reached when "Teddy <strong>Roosevelt</strong>," terror <strong>of</strong><br />

Wyoming ranges for many years, was brought out.<br />

<strong>The</strong> President made but a short stop between Cheyenne<br />

and North Platte, Neb., and that was at Sidney, where he<br />

delivered a short address, entering Iowa at Council Bluffs<br />

early Tuesday morning. At Webster City and Iowa Falls<br />

brief halts were made, and at Cedar Rapids President Roose-<br />

velt addressed five thousand people from the car platform,<br />

speaking particularly to the normal school pupils. Brief stops<br />

were also made at Independence and Manchester. <strong>The</strong> presi-<br />

dential special then proceeded to Dubuque. Here, after a<br />

drive about the hills overlooking the Mississippi and a short<br />

speech to six thousand school children, the President drove to
