from his delegation to serve on the aforesaid committees.<br />

ISLAND DELEGATES ARE SEATED<br />

After the adoption <strong>of</strong> the resolution, Mr. Root said:<br />

Gentlemen <strong>of</strong> the Convention: Before directing the call <strong>of</strong> the roll the chair<br />

vpishes the instructions <strong>of</strong> the convention upon the question which he will now state.<br />

<strong>The</strong> national committee has placed upon the temporarj- roll the names <strong>of</strong> delegates<br />

from Porto Rico and the Philippines. <strong>The</strong> chair does not feel authorized to direct the<br />

calling <strong>of</strong> those names upon the roll without the instruction <strong>of</strong> the convention. Will<br />

the convention take action upon the question?<br />

<strong>The</strong> action was taken on motion <strong>of</strong> Senator Foraker <strong>of</strong><br />

Mr. Root explained that the decision meant that two dele-<br />

gates from Porto Rico and six delegates from the Philippines<br />

would have seats in the convention with the power <strong>of</strong> voting,<br />

the latter delegation having two votes.<br />

INVITATION TO WORLD'S FAIR IS READ<br />

Senator Depew was recognized <strong>by</strong> the chair and addressed<br />

the convention regarding the invitation which he had received<br />

for the delegates and representatives <strong>of</strong> the press to attend<br />

the World's Fair at St. Louis.<br />

On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Ernst <strong>of</strong> Kentucky the convention<br />

adjourned until the following noon.
