Stillwell Edwards Speaks for the South—Nomination <strong>of</strong><br />

Charles W. Fairbanks—<strong>The</strong> Convention Adjourns.<br />

<strong>The</strong> third and last session <strong>of</strong> the Republican National<br />

Convention was called to order at 10.30 a. m., Thursday morn-<br />

ing. At the conclusion <strong>of</strong> the opening prayer, Chairman Can-<br />

non presented the following announcement to the reading<br />

clerk:<br />

"On July 6th, at Jackson, Michigan, there will be celebrated<br />

the fiftieth anniversary <strong>of</strong> the birth <strong>of</strong> the Republican party,<br />

the time when and the place where it received its name.<br />

Secretary Hay will deliver the principal address. Senator<br />

Fairbanks and others will address the meeting."<br />

<strong>The</strong>n followed an announcement that the recently elected<br />

Republican National Committee would meet in the Coliseum<br />

Annex immediately on the adjournment <strong>of</strong> the convention.<br />

CALLING THE ROLL<br />

Chairman Cannon at once announced tnat the next order<br />

<strong>of</strong> business would be a rollcall <strong>of</strong> the States for the nomination<br />

<strong>of</strong> President <strong>of</strong> the United States. <strong>The</strong> clerk called 'Ala-<br />

bama," and immediately Oscar R. Hundley, <strong>of</strong> that State,<br />
