<strong>The</strong> launching <strong>of</strong> a man<br />

<strong>The</strong>odore <strong>Roosevelt</strong> was born in New York City on<br />

October 27, 1858, and is the son <strong>of</strong> a successful business man<br />

and philanthropist well known and honored in that city. <strong>The</strong><br />

son's uncle, R. B. <strong>Roosevelt</strong>, is also distinguished as politician<br />

and author.<br />

RESUME OF HIS LIFE<br />

<strong>The</strong>odore was educated at Harvard, being graduated in<br />

1880. He at once interested himself in local politics, and<br />

became a New York State Assemblyman in 18S2. In 1884 he<br />

was a member <strong>of</strong> the National Republican Convention; in 1886,<br />

a Republican candidate for mayor <strong>of</strong> New York; in 1889 he was<br />

made United States Civil Service Commissioner, serving until<br />

1895, when he became president <strong>of</strong> the New York Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Police Commissioners, holding this position until 1897, when<br />

he accepted the post, <strong>of</strong>fered him <strong>by</strong> President McKinley, <strong>of</strong><br />

Assistant Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Navy. When the Spanish war<br />

broke out he became colonel <strong>of</strong> the famous Rough Riders<br />

regiment which served in Cuba so gallantly. In 1900 he was<br />

nominated at the Philadelphia Convention for Vice-President,<br />

and became President on the death <strong>of</strong> President McKinley,<br />

Sept. 14, 1901.<br />

ROOSEVELT AS AN AUTHOR<br />

Mr. <strong>Roosevelt</strong> began to write books as a young man <strong>of</strong><br />

twenty-five. His "Hunting Trips <strong>of</strong> a Ranchman" appeared<br />

in 1883. Other books, in order <strong>of</strong> their publication, are, "His-<br />

tory <strong>of</strong> the Naval War in 181 2," "<strong>The</strong> Lives <strong>of</strong> Thomas Hart<br />

Benton and <strong>of</strong> Gouverneur Morris in the 'American Statesmen<br />

Series'," "Ranch <strong>Life</strong> and the Hunting Trail," "Essays on<br />

Practical Politics," "<strong>The</strong> Winning <strong>of</strong> the West," "History <strong>of</strong><br />

New York City," and "<strong>The</strong> Wilderness Hunter." This is a
