WESTWARD HO!<br />

Enthusiastic Crowds at Every Stopping Place—In Minneapolis and St. Paul<br />

—<strong>The</strong> Wage-Worker and the Tiller <strong>of</strong> the Soil—Through the Dakotas<br />

— <strong>The</strong> Philippine Policy — Yellowstone Park — <strong>The</strong> President in<br />

Nebraska— Across the State <strong>of</strong> Iowa.<br />

<strong>The</strong> President reached St. Paul after a busy day traveling<br />

through Wisconsin and Minnesota, where he was greeted <strong>by</strong><br />

enthusiastic throngs at every stopping place. As the presi-<br />

dential train pulled through the yards at the union depot, Hat-<br />

tery A <strong>of</strong> the Minnesota National Guard, stationed on the<br />

opposite side <strong>of</strong> the river, fired the presidential salute, in which<br />

the engines in the yards and the strong lungs <strong>of</strong> the immense<br />

crowd joined. <strong>The</strong> committee, headed <strong>by</strong> Governor Van<br />

Sant, briefly welcomed the party, who were at once taken for<br />

a carriage drive through the down-town streets. At the capi-<br />

tol, the house and senate, in joint session, received the Presi-<br />

dent with cheers. Previous to his arrival, Archbishop Ireland<br />

had delivered a brief and eloquent prayer for the prosperity<br />

<strong>of</strong> the nation and its chief executive, and as soon as the legis-<br />

lators were seated, after greeting President <strong>Roosevelt</strong>, the<br />

latter spoke at some length on "Good Citizenship."<br />

RACE SUICIDE<br />

A large platform had been erected at the east entrance <strong>of</strong><br />

the capitol, where a crowd <strong>of</strong> many thousands awaited the<br />

President, who delivered a second address, following the gen-<br />
