DAILY LIFE AT THE WHITE HOUSE<br />

Visits from Societies—Mrs. <strong>Roosevelt</strong> Entertains Six Hundred Children<br />

<strong>The</strong> President's Daily Habits—A Remarkable Memory—Official Duties<br />

—Diversions—Fond <strong>of</strong> Long Walks— Plays Tennis Well—And Enjoys<br />

Wrestling—<strong>The</strong> President's Secretary—Egg Rolling—At Oyster Bay.<br />

Mrs. <strong>Roosevelt</strong>, having such a large family, is so busy<br />

with her household duties that it is impossible for her to give<br />

much time to receiving visitors. Necessarily, a lady in her<br />

position, must devote considerable time to society. This<br />

proves, however, to be a great tax upon her strength, as well<br />

as her time. She <strong>of</strong>ten receives bodies <strong>of</strong> women, like the<br />

D. A. R.'s, the Congress <strong>of</strong> Mothers, and other women's soci-<br />

eties that frequently come to Washington. Very <strong>of</strong>ten, too,<br />

she receives ladies who are visiting Washington when they<br />

form a party and write making an appointment with her.<br />

She is always glad to do so, whenever it is possible. She<br />

never refuses a request <strong>of</strong> this kind if she can possibly avoid<br />

it. She receives small delegations <strong>of</strong> visitors in the Blue<br />

Room, and if the number is not too large, she invites them to<br />

sip tea with her. When societies visit her, however, she<br />

receives them in the East Room, because the Blue Room is<br />

not large enough.<br />

A CHILDREN'S RECEPTION<br />

Mrs. <strong>Roosevelt</strong> gave one <strong>of</strong> the most delightful receptions<br />

last winter that has ever been held at the White House. This<br />
