among the cabinet <strong>of</strong>ficers. After Mrs. Hay the ladies stand<br />

in line and bow to the visitors as they pass along, as follows:<br />

the wife <strong>of</strong> the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Treasury, the wife <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Secretary <strong>of</strong> War, the wife <strong>of</strong> the Attorney-General, the wife<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Postmaster-General, the wife <strong>of</strong> the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Navy, the wife <strong>of</strong> the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Interior, the wife <strong>of</strong><br />

the Secretary <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, and the wife <strong>of</strong> the Secretary <strong>of</strong><br />

Commerce and Labor. In cases where a cabinet <strong>of</strong>ficer is a<br />

widower, as is the case with Secretary Wilson, <strong>of</strong> the Depart-<br />

ment <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, his daughter, or some other lady <strong>of</strong> the<br />

family, is entitled to the place. <strong>The</strong> visitors are not intro-<br />

duced to any <strong>of</strong> the cabinet ladies, but simply pass on into the<br />

East Room. <strong>The</strong> cabinet <strong>of</strong>ficers themselves generally stand<br />

back <strong>of</strong> the ladies.<br />

FOUR OTHER RECEPTIONS<br />

In addition to the public reception there are four other<br />

receptions each winter. To attend these it is necessary to<br />

have an invitation.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se invitations are sent to all the <strong>of</strong>ficials in Wash-<br />

ington, their wives and daughters who are in society, as well<br />

as to resident society in the national capital according to a<br />

selected list. One <strong>of</strong> these receptions is given in honor <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Army and Navy. <strong>The</strong> other three are as follows: one in honor<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Diplomatic Corps at Washington, one in honor <strong>of</strong> the<br />

members <strong>of</strong> Congress, and another in honor <strong>of</strong> the Judiciary.
