Ellenberger <strong>and</strong> Cory; 45 by Dornan, <strong>of</strong> whom nothing could be learned, except<br />

that his article was published in a Rhodesian 1908 scientific journal: 46 <strong>and</strong> by<br />

Lagden, a retired senior British civil servant who spent sixteen years in<br />

Basutol<strong>and</strong>, headed up <strong>the</strong> SANAC, <strong>and</strong> wrote a book in 1909 to lobby for <strong>the</strong><br />

exclusion <strong>of</strong> Basutol<strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong> Union on <strong>the</strong> grounds that <strong>the</strong> Basotho were<br />

ready for independence. 47 Of <strong>the</strong>se four paternalists, only Lagden had absorbed<br />

<strong>the</strong> Zulu-centric version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mfecane narrative <strong>and</strong> none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m adopted<br />

Macgregor’s generic term Difakane. <strong>The</strong>ir reliance on secondary sources is<br />

evident from <strong>the</strong> repetitions in <strong>the</strong>ir narratives. This can be seen in Lagden, who<br />

blamed <strong>the</strong> Ngwane for <strong>the</strong> destruction <strong>of</strong> 30 chiefdoms <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> killing <strong>of</strong> at<br />

least 100 000 people, <strong>and</strong> Dornan’s claim that <strong>the</strong> Ndebele ‘devastated <strong>the</strong><br />

greater part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> countries now known as <strong>the</strong> Transvaal <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Orange River<br />
