Irregular verbs in the preterite<br />

Th ere are several irregular verbs in the preterite. While patterns do emerge and the endings are<br />

similar, it is important to understand the various types of conjugations.<br />

<strong>Verb</strong>s with irregular stems and a special set of endings<br />

Below is a set of endings that are used with several <strong>com</strong>mon irregular verbs in the preterite.<br />

-e -imos<br />

-iste -isteis<br />

-o -ieron<br />

Fortunately, the irregular stems that take these endings follow three recognizable patterns:<br />

◆ Andar, estar, and tener have the letters uv in the irregular preterite stem.<br />

◆ Caber, haber, poder, and poner have a u in the irregular preterite stem.<br />

◆ Hacer, querer, and venir have an i in the irregular preterite stem.<br />

Below are eleven verbs that take these endings, along with their conjugated forms in the<br />

preterite.<br />

haber to have (auxiliary) hub- hube, hubiste, hubo, hubimos, hubisteis, hubieron<br />

poder to be able to pud- pude, pudiste, pudo, pudimos, pudisteis, pudieron<br />

poner to put, place pus- puse, pusiste, puso, pusimos, pusisteis, pusieron<br />

saber to know, fi nd out sup- supe, supiste, supo, supimos, supisteis, supieron<br />
