sentence will carry the meaning.
Th e formation of the past perfect tense is identical to that of the present perfect, except that
the conjugation of haber, the auxiliary verb, is in the imperfect. Th e conjugated form of haber is
then followed by the past participle of the main verb.
Regular past participles
Th e patterns for regular past participles can be found in Chapter 17, Th e present perfect tense.
Below are examples of regular past participles used with the past perfect tense.
Yo había preparado la cena. I had prepared dinner.
No habíamos probado ese método. We hadn’t tried that method.
Habías estado aquí. You had been here.
Habíais trabajado duro. You all had worked hard.
Él no había visitado a mi tío. He hadn’t visited my uncle.
¿Se habían acostado? Had they gone to bed?
Th e following examples include a specifi c cutoff point. Remember that the verb aft er a preposition
is not conjugated.
