Phrases with two verbs—querer, poder, deber When two verbs operate together to form a single idea, the fi rst verb is conjugated and the second verb remains in its infi nitive form, as when a conjugated form of tener que infinitive expresses obligation (Chapter 4). Another way to look at this is to see that the fi rst verb is the real action, while the second verb is proposed action. Consider the sentence, “I want to play the violin.” Th e only thing that’s really happening in this sentence is “wanting”; “playing” is merely a proposal, not the reality. In the section on regular -er verbs in Chapter 1, you learned that deber means “to owe.” When directly followed by another verb, however, deber means “ought,” as in “I ought to study” (also translated as “I should study”). Because the subject in this context is the ambiguous “it,” both hacer and estar are conjugated only in the third-person singular when describing weather. Note that you always use hace noun and está adjective or gerund. You cannot mix and match these expressions, because they won’t make sense if you do.
