Most <strong>of</strong> the local structure in a ship exists to resist lateral loads.<br />

Example: The sketch below shows a bulkhead between the deck <strong>and</strong> inner bottom,<br />

supported by one intermediate deck. The bulk cargo (liquid or granular) will exert a<br />

lateral pressure on the bulkhead.<br />
