• Discuss application <strong>of</strong> energy methods in structural analysis<br />

• Show how conservation <strong>of</strong> energy conservation to the symmetry <strong>of</strong><br />

structural stiffness terms<br />

Energy Methods<br />

Structural analysis is concerned with forces,<br />

deflections, stresses <strong>and</strong> strains. All these involve<br />

energy. An analysis <strong>of</strong> energy can be a way to<br />

simplify structural analysis. Energy is a scalar,<br />

<strong>and</strong> must be conserved, somehow. In some cases<br />

the mechanical work done by a force is converted<br />

to heat by friction:
