In some cases the mechanical work done by a force is converted to elastic<br />

potential energy in a spring. Potential energy (in a spring or in a<br />

gravitational field) can later be recovered:<br />

Consider a body subject to a simple axial load:<br />

The above is correct for situations where axial stresses dominate, as in<br />

column compression or simple beam bending. This does not take shear strain<br />

energy into account.
