Topic 15: Matrix Structural Analysis<br />

Introduction<br />

In this chapter we will<br />

• Discuss a very general method to analyze structures, to give bending<br />

moments <strong>and</strong> axial forces in general frame structures.<br />

The behavior <strong>of</strong> a structure can be expressed in<br />

matrix form as;<br />

This type <strong>of</strong> equation is 'discrete'. It represents a<br />

set <strong>of</strong> relationships among a finite set <strong>of</strong> degrees <strong>of</strong><br />

freedom (d<strong>of</strong>).<br />

For a general structure or arbitrary shape, the<br />

behavior can be adequately described by
