Introduction<br />

In this Chapter we will<br />

• Develop the elastic behavior <strong>of</strong> beams<br />

• Show the relationship among load, shear, bending, slope <strong>and</strong><br />

deflection<br />

Coordinate System <strong>and</strong> Sign Convention<br />

The st<strong>and</strong>ard coordinate system has the x axis<br />

along the neural axis <strong>of</strong> the beam. The positive y<br />

axis is pointed up. The sign convention for force<br />

<strong>and</strong> moment vectors follows the right h<strong>and</strong> rule;<br />

+ Forces <strong>and</strong> deflections follow the axes.<br />

+ Moments <strong>and</strong> rotations follow the curl <strong>of</strong> the<br />

fingers (on the right h<strong>and</strong>) when the thumb is<br />

pointing along the axis.<br />
