When a ship rolls the weight <strong>and</strong> buoyancy forces cause lateral as well as vertical<br />

bending. Normally the bending moment vector is aligned with the ship’s y axis. My<br />

is the bending moment that results from buoyancy <strong>and</strong> weight forces.<br />

When the vessels rolls by an angle q, the moment vector remains horizontal. This is<br />

because the buoyancy <strong>and</strong> gravity forces are always vertical. This means that the<br />

bending moment is no longer aligned with the y,z axis <strong>of</strong> the vessel;
