Local structural torsion can be found throughout<br />

ships. Bending <strong>of</strong> a frame can result in a torsion in<br />

a supporting frame.<br />

Torsion Review<br />

Consider a solid circular shaft subject to a<br />

torsional moment. The longitudinal axis <strong>of</strong> the<br />

cylinder x axis. A torsion is a moment about the x<br />

axis. In such a case we get an ideal torsional<br />

response. Every circular cross section remains<br />

plane <strong>and</strong> remains centered on the x axis. Each<br />

plane rotates slightly in comparison to its<br />

neighboring cross sections. Assume that two<br />

planes (1 <strong>and</strong> 2) are separated by a distance dx. In<br />

comparison to their original orientations, the<br />

planes are rotated
