Example <strong>of</strong> MDM with Sway<br />

To illustrate the moment distribution method with<br />

sway, we will use a problem similar to Example 3<br />

in Topic 13. In this case the problem has a roller<br />

on the left, instead <strong>of</strong> a pin. As a result the frame<br />

can sway.<br />

To solve the problem we need to split the problem<br />

into two component problems. The first problem<br />

has sway prevented (by a pin on the left support).<br />

The complementary problem has an imposed sway<br />

which will create a reaction <strong>of</strong> opposite magnitude<br />

to the first problem.<br />

The first problem was solved in Example 3<br />

above. The reaction at the left h<strong>and</strong> pin was (see<br />

pg. 130);
