timber for house construction rather than the traditional<br />

masonry or concrete. The attitudes <strong>of</strong> the authorities and<br />

the public are examined particularly in relation to doubts<br />

about durability, fire risk, appearance, security, and struc-<br />

tural safety <strong>of</strong> timber houses. Recommendations are made<br />

for the design and erection <strong>of</strong> experimental and prototype<br />

timber houses and for the promotion <strong>of</strong> timber as a con-<br />
