A comprehensive review; the following main subjects<br />

are discussed on a country-by-country basis: economic-<br />

geographic foundations; forest distribution; forest utiliza<br />

tion; forestry policy and law; forestry administration; train-<br />

ing <strong>of</strong> forestry personnel; and research. The need is stressed<br />

for a clear separation between agricultural and forestry re-<br />

quirements, and a halt to the expansion <strong>of</strong> agricultural de-<br />

velopment at the expense <strong>of</strong> actual/potential forest land.<br />

Recommendations include: intensified training <strong>of</strong> forest<br />

workers and technologists; and increased research in silvi-<br />

culture and work science. Caribbean countries constitute<br />

an important potential export market for Central <strong>America</strong>n<br />

timber. Honduras is cited as the Central <strong>America</strong>n country<br />

with the most clearly developed forestry policy, and there is<br />

a discussion <strong>of</strong> the activities <strong>of</strong> the Honduran Corporation<br />

for <strong>Forest</strong> Development (COHDEFOR), which has exclusive<br />

rights to harvesting <strong>of</strong> forests in Honduras.<br />
