Describes studies of the damage to wood by four wood rotting
fungi, Pleurotus roseopilatus, Polyporus occidentalis,
Poria sp., and Trametes corrugata. To study the action
of the fungi, safranine-picroaniline blue and safranine fast
green were used to follow the growth of hyphae and the extent
of damage to the wood. Fibres had less hyphal growth
and more deterioration, and vessel elements more hyphal
growth and less deterioration, and parenchyma cells had
hyphal growth in direct proportion to the deterioration.
