An overview <strong>of</strong> the structural applications <strong>of</strong> nails is pro-<br />

vided. The characteristics <strong>of</strong> nails and nailed joints are de-<br />

scribed. The principal theories that have been suggested<br />

for the prediction <strong>of</strong> the behavior <strong>of</strong> nailed joints are re-<br />

viewed. Rules for the design <strong>of</strong> nailed joints contained in<br />

some <strong>of</strong> the most important codes are discussed. Various<br />

testing procedures are described. Suggestions are <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

for the development <strong>of</strong> limit states rules for the design <strong>of</strong><br />

nailed joints appropriate for Mexican conditions. Research<br />

projects aimed at improving the efficiency <strong>of</strong> nails as con-<br />

necting elements are recommended.<br />
