Fitzroya cupressoides (Alerce or Lahuen) is one <strong>of</strong> the most<br />

valuable large forest trees <strong>of</strong> Chile, yielding a high-quality<br />

durable s<strong>of</strong>twood timber. This conifer is one <strong>of</strong> the few<br />

trees capable <strong>of</strong> growing on poor, swampy sites in southern<br />

Chile where its range includes both the coastal and inland<br />

ranges. In recent years it has been seriously over-exploited,<br />

and under government decree No. 490 <strong>of</strong> September 5,<br />

1977, felling will in future be prohibited except where au-<br />

thorized by the National <strong>Forest</strong> Service for strictly limited<br />

and defined purposes.<br />
