Howe, J.P. 1974. Relationship of climate to the specific
gravity of four Costa Rican hardwoods. Wood and Fiber.
5(4):347-352.
Increment cores were taken from trees of four hardwood
species (Brosimum sp., Cedrela mexicana, Cordia alliodora,
Virola koschnyi), each growing in areas of Costa Rica hav-
ing widely different climatic conditions (heat, precipitation,
humidity). Results show that climate significantly influ-
ences the specific gravity of Cedrela mexicana, Cordia al-
liodora, V. koschnyi in different ways, but not significantly
effect that of Brosimum sp. Relations between specific
gravity and other features of the trees were examined.
