Describes research done in France and Belgium on four tropical hardwood species (Entandrophragma angolense, Vi- rols spp., Baillonella toxisperma, and Afzelia bipindensis). Impact bending strength, hardness, and shear strength par- allel were determined to be as important as density for de- termining the energy requirements for sawing these species.
