extreme example <strong>of</strong> this is that <strong>of</strong> a bass that bore tag No. 197, which was seined,<br />

tagged, <strong>and</strong> released in June in <strong>the</strong> Niantic River. This bass was caught in a trap<br />

in Niantic Harbor in July <strong>and</strong> released, caught on a rod <strong>and</strong> line in <strong>the</strong> Niantic River<br />

in September by <strong>the</strong> author <strong>and</strong> released, <strong>and</strong> caught <strong>and</strong> released again while seining<br />

for tagging purposes in <strong>the</strong> Niantic River in early October. Returns from tagged<br />

striped bass first indicated that a migration to <strong>the</strong> south was starting in late October,<br />

<strong>the</strong>se fish had only moved about 10 miles, <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>the</strong> first that had ever been<br />

taken to <strong>the</strong> south or west <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> original point or release. Almost immediately<br />

<strong>the</strong>reafter bass that had been tagged in Connecticut waters during <strong>the</strong> summer began<br />

to be caught in large quantities in <strong>the</strong> pound-nets at Montauk, Long Isl<strong>and</strong>, N. ** т
