The most evidently, the versions recorded since 1972 reveal a double ratio of men to<br />

women singers (Table III). A male predominance among ballad singers has indeed been<br />

noted in Newfoundland as in the other Canadian provinces; but this, as Doucette and<br />

Quigley indicate, cannot be taken at face value:<br />

Ballad singing appears to be more or less evenly distributed between the<br />

sexes, with men rather than women having a slight edge, possibly because<br />

men have been more accessible as informants in some COllecting<br />

sitllations. 2<br />
