3. A detailed Water Management and Conservation Program being implemented in the Lake<br />

Chelan Reclamation District. This Program includes implementation of centralized<br />

<strong>irrigation</strong> scheduling and remote telemetry <strong>to</strong> moni<strong>to</strong>r and control pumping stations.<br />

4. Project WET - this is an interdisciplinary, supplementary <strong>water</strong> education program for<br />

teachers. The goal of Project WET is <strong>to</strong> facilitate and promote the awareness, appreciation,<br />

and knowledge of <strong>water</strong> resources, especially the wise <strong>management</strong> of these resources <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>protect</strong> the future social and economic livelihood.<br />

Soil Conservation Service<br />

The Soil Conservation Service (SCS) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.<br />

The goal of SCS is preservation of both quality and quantity of the soil and <strong>water</strong> resources of<br />

the United States. To that end they have initiated many programs and projects for reducing soil<br />

erosion and <strong>water</strong> pollution from both natural and man-made causes. They provide technical<br />

assistance in the planning of farm, lives<strong>to</strong>ck, and dairy activities as well as aid in developing on-farm<br />

<strong>water</strong> conservation plans. A recent added responsibility is moni<strong>to</strong>ring <strong>to</strong> ensure farmer compliance<br />

with the regulations of the Food Security Act. Recently, they have been named lead federal Agency<br />

responsible for the designation of wetlands.<br />

Many of the National Practices that guide SCS in on-farm engineering/planning have been<br />

referenced in the presentations of the Implementation Practices in Chapter 4.<br />

Washing<strong>to</strong>n State University and Cooperative Extension<br />

Cooperative Extension (WSU-CE) is charged with developing and disseminating knowledge<br />

that will improve the lives of all people in the state of Washing<strong>to</strong>n. It is jointly funded by the state<br />

and federal governments. Washing<strong>to</strong>n State University operates several Research and Extension<br />

Centers for plant breeding, fertilizer and pesticide use, <strong>irrigation</strong>, cultural and harvest <strong>practices</strong>,<br />

and machinery research. WSU-CE Offices are located in all counties in the State and Extension<br />

Agents are available <strong>to</strong> farmers for consultation on virtually any aspect of their operations.<br />
