IP Filter rule basics 4-36 Understanding Policy Configuration Sharing IP Filter sessions in an HA cluster When IP Filter session sharing is configured for an HA cluster, the primary Sidewinder G2 sends out multicast messages to notify the secondary/standby Sidewinder G2 of IP Filter session activity (such as a new session, closed session, or change in session state). Each time a secondary/standby Sidewinder G2 receives a message, it updates its local session table accordingly. All sessions received from the primary Sidewinder G2 will have a status of shared on the secondary/standby Sidewinder G2. When HA causes a secondary/standby Sidewinder G2 to take over as the acting primary, the shared sessions on the acting primary become available. When a packet is received for a session, it will be validated against the rules of the acting primary Sidewinder G2. The acting primary Sidewinder G2 will then begin sending multicast state-change messages. Specifying the number of TCP or UDP IP Filter sessions By default, the Sidewinder G2 allows only 1,000 active TCP and UDP filter sessions. These limits can be changed by modifying the Max TCP Sessions or Max UDP Sessions field in the IP Filter General Properties window. See “About the IP Filter General Properties window” on page 7-25.
C HAPTER 5 Creating Rule Elements About this chapter This is a task-oriented chapter that provides instructions for creating rule elements. Rule elements include users and user groups, network objects, and service groups. Rule elements allow you to organize multiple users, objects, or services into useful groups that will save time and enable you to create fewer rules with greater capabilities. Creating users and user groups Note: For an overview of each rule element, see Chapter 4. This chapter covers the following topics: “Creating users and user groups” on page 5-1 “Creating network objects” on page 5-10 “Creating service groups” on page 5-21 A user is a person who uses the networking services provided by the Sidewinder G2. A user group is a logical grouping of one or more users, identified by a single name. You can also nest one or more user groups within a user group. Note: For basic information on users and user groups, see “Users and user groups” on page 4-8. To display the current users and user groups configured for your Sidewinder G2, using the Admin Console select Policy Configuration -> Rule Elements -> Users & User Groups.
