The Sidewinder G2 uses the sendmail message transfer agent to
receive and route mail messages. When you run mail on a network
protected by the Sidewinder G2, all messages coming into and going
out from your site must be routed through the Sidewinder G2.
Mail server configuration options
The Sidewinder G2 offers two configuration options for handling mail:
Transparent—This configuration option allows you to use
transparent SMTP services (without sendmail processes running
directly on the Sidewinder G2). Transparent SMTP service indicates
that all inbound and outbound mail passes by proxy through the
Sidewinder G2, just as other proxy traffic does. When you use
transparent SMTP, the SMTP proxy is enabled and policy controls
for mail are enforced via the active policy rules. If you selected
Internet Services during configuration, two rules (smtp_in and
smtp_out) are automatically created and added to the Mail rule
group. The Mail rule group is automatically included in the active
proxy rule group. Mail filtering is not supported for transparent
mail services.
