Colin Mooers is Chair <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Politics and School <strong>of</strong><br />

Public Administration at Ryerson University, Toronto. He is also affiliated<br />

to the York-Ryerson Graduate Programme in Communication and<br />

Culture. His has written on the public sphere; the politics <strong>of</strong> social<br />

movements; and capitalism and citizenship. He is the author <strong>of</strong> The<br />

Making <strong>of</strong> Bourgeois Europe: Absolutism, Revolution and the Rise <strong>of</strong><br />

Capitalism in England, France and Germany (Verso, 1991) and a contributing<br />

editor <strong>of</strong> Restructuring and Resistance: Canadian Public Policy in the<br />

Age <strong>of</strong> Global Capitalism (Fernwood 2000).<br />

Ellen Meiksins Wood was for many years Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Political Science at<br />

York University, Toronto. She has published widely on the nature and<br />

history <strong>of</strong> capitalism, ancient Greek democracy, and the history <strong>of</strong><br />

political thought, ancient and modern. Among her books are The Pristine<br />

Culture <strong>of</strong> Capitalism, Peasant-Citizen and Slave, Democracy Against<br />

Capitalism, The Origin <strong>of</strong> Capitalism: A Longer View, and most recently,<br />

<strong>Empire</strong> <strong>of</strong> Capital.<br />

Thom Workman writes and teaches in the area <strong>of</strong> critical political<br />

economy and political philosophy at the University <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> Brunswick,<br />

Fredericton, <strong>New</strong> Brunswick, Canada. He is currently preparing a<br />

manuscript on the distinctly modern reading <strong>of</strong> the ancient Greek<br />

historian Thucydides, a study that forms part <strong>of</strong> a wider research project<br />

that explores the relationship between the intellectual foundation <strong>of</strong><br />

modernity and contemporary forms <strong>of</strong> political irrationalism.
