NOTES ON CONTRIBUTORS
is a novelist, historian, and playwright and commentator on the
current situation in the Middle East. He has written over a dozen books
on world history and politics including the recent bestsellers Clash of
Fundamentalisms: Crusades, Jihads and Modernity, Bush in Babylon: The
Recolonisation of Iraq, and Rough Music: Blair/Bombs/Baghdad/Terror.He
is also the author of five novels and scripts for both stage and screen. The
first novel of the Islam Quintet, Shadows of the Pomegranate Tree, was
awarded the Archbishop San Clemente del Instituto Rosalia de Castro
Prize for Best Foreign Language Fiction published in Spain in 1994 and,
like the Book of Saladin, has been translated into several languages. He is
an editor of the New Left Review and writes regularly for the London
Review of Books.
Aziz Al-Azmeh is a Distinguished Visiting Professor, Humanities Center,
Central European University, Budapest and Fellow at the Institute for
Advanced Study, Budapest. He has taught and published widely in both
Arabic and English on Arab history and culture, Islamic political
thought, Middle East studies, and the work of Ibn Khaldun. His published
works in English include Arabic Thought and Islamic Societies,
Muslim Kingship: Power and the Sacred in Muslim, Christian and Pagan
Polities, and Islams and Modernities as well as numerous articles in
scholarly journals, edited collections, and newspapers.
Paul Cammack is Professor of Politics and Head of the Department of
Politics and Philosophy at Manchester Metropolitan University, and
author of Capitalism and Democracy in the Third World. He has written
