NOTES ON CONTRIBUTORS<br />

is a novelist, historian, and playwright and commentator on the<br />

current situation in the Middle East. He has written over a dozen books<br />

on world history and politics including the recent bestsellers Clash <strong>of</strong><br />

Fundamentalisms: Crusades, Jihads and Modernity, Bush in Babylon: The<br />

Recolonisation <strong>of</strong> Iraq, and Rough Music: Blair/Bombs/Baghdad/Terror.He<br />

is also the author <strong>of</strong> five novels and scripts for both stage and screen. The<br />

first novel <strong>of</strong> the Islam Quintet, Shadows <strong>of</strong> the Pomegranate Tree, was<br />

awarded the Archbishop San Clemente del Instituto Rosalia de Castro<br />

Prize for Best Foreign Language Fiction published in Spain in 1994 and,<br />

like the Book <strong>of</strong> Saladin, has been translated into several languages. He is<br />

an editor <strong>of</strong> the <strong>New</strong> Left Review and writes regularly for the London<br />

Review <strong>of</strong> Books.<br />

Aziz Al-Azmeh is a Distinguished Visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, Humanities Center,<br />

Central European University, Budapest and Fellow at the Institute for<br />

Advanced Study, Budapest. He has taught and published widely in both<br />

Arabic and English on Arab history and culture, Islamic political<br />

thought, Middle East studies, and the work <strong>of</strong> Ibn Khaldun. His published<br />

works in English include Arabic Thought and Islamic Societies,<br />

Muslim Kingship: Power and the Sacred in Muslim, Christian and Pagan<br />

Polities, and Islams and Modernities as well as numerous articles in<br />

scholarly journals, edited collections, and newspapers.<br />

Paul Cammack is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Politics and Head <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Politics and Philosophy at Manchester Metropolitan University, and<br />

author <strong>of</strong> Capitalism and Democracy in the Third World. He has written
