Pipe cleaning 14. • Notify relevant authorities and adjacent land owners before decommissioning activities commence. Waste management and pollution remediation 15. • Vent and clean the pipeline that is to be decommissioned to prevent future leakage of hydrocarbons into the environment or build-up of gases. 16. • Clean and purge all associated equipment before disconnecting or removing it. 17. • Ensure that product removed from the pipeline during decommissioning cleaning is used or disposed of appropriately. 18. • Ensure that water (or any other substance used to clean the pipe) is treated and tested for hydrocarbons before being discharged or disposed of. 19. • Reuse and, if that is not possible, recycle as much of the removed material as possible. Disposal of material should be a last resort, and done so as to prevent pollution of the environment. Rehabilitation 20. • Rehabilitate areas where surface disturbance took place as part of the pipeline decommissioning (e.g. through removal of surface equipment or pipeline). 21. • Based on the investigations undertaken prior to decommissioning, consider filling the pipeline with e.g. cement slurry or other appropriate material to prevent subsidence where appropriate.
