O'Halloran is singular in the opinion that it was the<br />

north side of the river which was called " Ath Cliath," and<br />

that it communicated with Dublin, which was on the south<br />

side, by a ford of hurdles, 3 and Vallancey asserts that the<br />

name was " Bally Lean Cliath " from being built in or near<br />

a fishing harbour where certain weirs made of hurdles<br />

were used.<br />

It thus appears that with the exception of O'Halloran o'Halionm<br />

these historians concur in ascribing the name " Ath Cliath,"<br />

to some peculiarity in the site of the city differing on the<br />

manner in which hurdles were employed whether in the<br />

foundations of houses or in roads on the river banks or in<br />

fishing weirs but agreeing in not tracing the name to any<br />

passage across the river, and that they are correct in one<br />

portion of their statement, that is, in asserting that Dublin<br />
