21st July, 1710: Report of Committee<br />

of Ballast Office : Had<br />

conferred with persons interested<br />

in the ground on the north side of<br />

the Channel relative to piling there,<br />

who would not contribute to the<br />

expense. Directions for dredging<br />

the channel and to make a bank on<br />

the north side. (City Assembly<br />

Rolls). 20th October, 1710: The<br />

Committee appointed to stake out<br />

the mears and bounds [of the<br />

N OTB continued.<br />

Channel] between Ringsend and<br />

Lazy Hill have not done so: The<br />

old channel will soon be filled up.<br />

The mears and bounds to be staked<br />

out, (City Assembly Rolls). 13th<br />

April, 1711 : Instructions given<br />

for bringing great quantities of<br />

stone and faggots which will make<br />

good that part of the banks not<br />

already secured on both sides of<br />

the channel, and fill up the mouth<br />

of the old, and will keep the freshets<br />

within the bounds of the new<br />

channel, and will make the new<br />

channel deeper (Jb.) 2nd May,<br />

1712 : It is necessary to enclose<br />

the channel to carry it directly to<br />

Salmon Pool. Had consulted<br />

many who are of opinion that the<br />

best way will be by laying kishes<br />

filled with stones and backing them<br />

with sand and gravel, which is<br />

found by the experience of some<br />

years past to withstand all the force<br />

of the floods that come down the<br />

river (76.) 22nd July, 1715 : Are<br />

laying down kishes to secure the<br />

north side of the channel and when<br />

a sufficient number of kishes are<br />

made will go on with the piling<br />

below Ringsend as formerly pro-<br />

posed: are now raising stones at<br />

Olontarf (76.) 1 4th October, 1715:<br />

Are laying down a quantity of<br />

kishes on the north side which has<br />

made good the bank as far as<br />

opposite Mabbot's mill. The<br />

remainder will be completed next<br />

summer, (Ibid).<br />

4th Friday after<br />

Christmas, 1715 : It is the opinion<br />

of merchants that the south side of<br />

the channel below Ringsend should<br />

be filled in, which will raise the south<br />

bank so high as to be a great<br />

shelter to shipping in the harbour,<br />

(Ibid). Same day : Petition that<br />

the strand between that taken in<br />

by Mercer and that granted to Sir<br />

John Rogerson be taken in, being<br />

now overflowed : that a wall be<br />

built to the east : sand and rubbish<br />

would fix it: length of wall 606<br />

feet : Sir J. Rogerson would then<br />

be encouraged to take in his strand:<br />

Ordered that the work do proceed,<br />

and that the Ballast Office do back<br />

said wall (Ibid). 20th January,<br />

1715-16: Have not been able to<br />

go on with the piling below Ringsend<br />

for want of oak timber :<br />

propose to carry the kishes up to<br />

Morney's dock (Ib.) 19th October,<br />

1716: Have made some progress<br />

in piling below Ringsend with an<br />

Engine made here, and intend
