EMR System Interaction to Laboratory In<strong>for</strong>mation System<br />

Fundamentally, three types of <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation <strong>in</strong>teractions exist between LIS <strong>and</strong> EMR <strong>in</strong> any<br />

environment. While these <strong>in</strong>teractions are not <strong>in</strong>terdependent <strong>and</strong> may st<strong>and</strong> alone, with fullcomputerized<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegration, all three will be implemented. These <strong>in</strong>teractions are:<br />

i. Patient Identification - Based on the Patient Identifier Cross-referenc<strong>in</strong>g (PIX) <strong>and</strong> Patient<br />

Demographic Query (PDQ) profiles.<br />

ii. Order transmission - Based on the Laboratory Test<strong>in</strong>g Workflow (LTW) IHE profile<br />

iii. Results transmission - Based on the Laboratory Test<strong>in</strong>g Workflow (LTW) IHE profile<br />

<strong>St<strong>and</strong>ards</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Guidel<strong>in</strong>es</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Electronic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Record</strong>s <strong>Systems</strong> <strong>in</strong> Kenya 47
