Case Scenario 4: Po<strong>in</strong>t of Care System<br />

cl<strong>in</strong>ician desks, laboratory <strong>and</strong> pharmacy) will have a computer with the EMR systems <strong>for</strong> data collection as<br />

care is provided.<br />

Workflow Processes<br />

The receptionist registers all new clients by captur<strong>in</strong>g their<br />

demographic <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial care details.<br />

The cl<strong>in</strong>icians (nurses, cl<strong>in</strong>ical officers <strong>and</strong> doctors) enter encounter<br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation directly <strong>in</strong>to the computer. Laboratory test orders <strong>and</strong><br />

prescriptions are entered directly <strong>in</strong>to the computer.<br />

At the pharmacy, the prescription is electronically retrieved <strong>and</strong><br />

medication is dispensed. In the event that a drug is not available, a<br />

hard copy version of the prescription is pr<strong>in</strong>ted out.<br />

At the laboratory, the test order is retrieved <strong>and</strong> laboratory tests<br />

done. A hard copy of the order can be pr<strong>in</strong>ted out when necessary.<br />

Results of lab tests are posted directly <strong>in</strong>to the computer <strong>for</strong><br />

retrieval by cl<strong>in</strong>icians.<br />
